Super Bowl XLV: Five Favorites

Super Bowls are one of the most significant cultural events in the U.S., with over 100 million viewers. And with Super Bowl XLV in the play books, I thought it appropriate to recall a few of the day’s highlights. Here are my five faves:

Very Favorite

Green Bay won. Though I am not professional football authority, about mid-way through the season, I saw the Packers play and said aloud, “I think this team could win it all.” They captured my fondness at that time – primarily because they had endured so many injuries and still found a way to win games. In a blog post I recently wrote, Why More Women Should Watch Football, I commented on the many parallels between sports and life. Green Bay stayed true to the season’s tradition last night. When their best corner (Woodson) and best receiver (Driver) left the game with injuries in the first half, the team could have folded. Instead, they persevered to bring down Big Ben and the Steelers.

Favorite Performance

Bah Humbug to the NY Times review – The Black Eyed Peas half-time show was awesome. I’m a big Pea fan anyway, and Luke and I do a fair amount of singing and dancing to their tunes pretty much every day. Luke sat with his eyes as wide as saucers for most of the show, then when The Dirty Bit came on, he could sit still no longer. Not only has Luke requested that the show never be erased, but the first thing out of his mouth this morning was, “Mom, can we watch the half-time show again?”

Favorite commercial

Volkswagen: The Force won me over. Maybe I’m a little bit biased b/c Luke is convinced his real name is Luke Skywalker, we just bought Star Wars Valentine’s cards yesterday and he spends almost every waking hour creating make-believe Star War movies, but I think this commercial is priceless.

Favorite Comment

Another one of Luke’s comments when I say, “I should write this down so I don’t forget.” Once/year, usually for the Super Bowl, I break down and make a meal that’s no gold standard for healthiness. Last night’s entrée was chicken nachos (loaded with lots of lettuce and tomatoes to make me feel better) and served with home-made guacamole. Though Luke initially looked at the chips, chicken and cheese concoction and said, “We’re having that for dinner?,” he wasn’t so sorry  when he took his first bite. He smeared spoons of guacamole over the top of his serving and later said, “Mommy, that is the best sauce I have ever had in my whole life.” Maybe his whole life is only seven years, but how’s a mommy to be sorry after that sweet comment?

Favorite Pre-game Broadcast

UNC beat Florida State by 20 points. I decided not to watch the DELUGE of pre-game Super Bowl broadcasting, primarily because I decided to rearrange Luke’s room and clean out his bookcase (which took HOURS!). But I was very happy to see the Tar Heels defeat the Seminoles, despite the loss of their point guard this week – another great example of thriving in the face of adversity. UNC may not be good enough to beat Duke at Cameron in a few days, but it’s really exciting to see them playing well – and looking happy – again.
