A Top Ten Feel Good List: Books

What makes you feel good?

As the  new year approaches, I recommend you create a top ten list of things that make you feel good. As such, I am writing a series of posts to share a few things that keep my life happy, healthy and in balance.

Yesterday I shared my love for music, and today, it’s all about books.

Books inspire, motivate, educate and entertain. Whether it’s an electronic format or the old-fashioned printed version, books are an important escape to another world.

I’ve read some wonderful books in the last year or so – below I’ll share some of these.

Motivation

Blindside Not only is this an inspiring story about Michael Oher, but now I’m a huge Michael Lewis fan. There’s much more to the story than millions of movie-goers enjoyed.

Open. Andre Agassi’s drug use was highly overblown by the media, as this autobiography is far more meaningful and deep than this particular low point. Written in a fast and dramatic style, Open provides an insightful glimpse at the challenges of a pro tennis player and the extreme dedication and focus  required to be the world’s #1.

Hard Work: A Life on and off the Court. I’m admittedly biased as a UNC fan, but Roy Williams has some nice lessons to impart on the value of hard work. Reading the book is like having a conversation with Roy himself.

Entertainment

The Art of Racing in the Rain. It’s hard to get much better than this novel by Garth Stein. It’s love at first sight when Enzo enters the story, so get ready to laugh, cry and appreciate your own little pooches even more than you already do.

Sliver of Truth. If you like mysteries, you won’t be able to put down this thriller by Lisa Unger. This fast paced novel is hard to put down, so the enjoyment won’t last long!

Education

Crush It. After launching his wildly successful Wine Library TV, Gary Vaynerchuk wrote a book to share his secrets on using social media to cash in on your passion. This book is fun and easy to read, and Vaynerchuk’s enthusiasm oozes at the seams of every written word.

Trust Agents. Chris Brogan, one of the pioneers of social software technologies, co-wrote this book with Julien Smith. Though this book is a bit more tedious to read than Crush It, it contains valuable details on how companies and individuals should execute a social media strategy.

Performance Nutrition. I enjoyed this informative book on how distance runners cano fuel a body for stronger workouts, faster recovery and better race times. (Frankly, I need all the help I can get at this age.) I wrote a book summary if you are interested in the highlights.

The One Minute Millionnaire. Though the title is a bit cheesy, Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen create an easy-reading guide to find your passion, set goals and make money while you’re doing it.

Inspiration

In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving. The Blindside made a big impression, so I read the book by Sean and Leigh Anne Touhy as well. Talk about inspiration! These two exemplify an attitude of giving that permeates their lifestyle through and through.

How Strong Women Pray and Live Your Joy. I was introduced to Bonnie St. John both literally and figuratively this past year when I spoke to her by phone. What a pleasure! More meaningful than her impressive credentials is her ability to inspire others to lead happier, more fulfilling lives.

Got any recommendations for 2011? Please send them my way!
